Finally, on August 15th, we had a cooler than normal day after 39 in a row within 5 degrees of normal. Still, the only two days this summer outside of that range were within 6 degrees of normal. In each of the last two summers, we had 12 days more than 6 degrees from normal by the end of August. The charts below show how consistent temperatures have been this summer compared to 2011-2013.
Heat waves are usually defined as 3 or more days well above the normal temperature. If we define that as more than 5 degrees above normal, there were two heat waves in each of the last two years and one in 2011, but we haven't even had two days in a row well above normal yet this summer, and we have only had one day well above normal! The high temperature so far in Harpswell is 87.8; in the last 3 years, we have averaged 4 days over 90. The lack of heat makes it seem like a very cool summer but it has actually only been slightly cooler than normal so far (about 0.4 degrees below normal on average since June 21).
